PEA set to invest USD13 billion for a nationwide intelligent power network

Thailand's state utility Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) will invest Bt400 billion (USD13b) to create its smart-grid system for a nationwide intelligent power network over the next 15 years. PEA provides electricity to 15 million households.

This smart grid project is aimed at modernising PEA's power-transmission system by deploying information and communications technology to support the distribution of electricity to households. The project is to be completed in 15 years.

The utility is also promoting efficient linkage of its power system with household users. It has conducted a study on the ICT-based system for a smart power-line grid over the past six years to improve its infrastructure.

PEA will pilot the system in high-power-consuming areas such as tourist destinations, including Phuket, Chiang Mai and Pattaya. This will involve changing the meter system and installation of appropriate equipment on a voluntary basis by the residents in these areas.

During T&D Smart Grids Asia 2010, Mr. Pantong Thinsatit, Senior Engineer of PEA highlighted the key requirements for smart grids development which are system interoperability, security, information management and data integration.

Next steps for PEA as they embark on its smart grids initiative include:
· Request for Smart Grids Road map proposal
· Review an existing infrastructures/roles to improve/upgrade/replacement in order to support Smart Grids Concept
· Select area for Smart Grids Pilot project
· Short Term and Long Term Planning for Smart Grids development

Indeed Thailand is one of the countries in the region making strides to intelligently upgrading its power network which makes it an apt venue for T&D Smart Grids Asia 2011. This year's conference and exhibition will take place in Bangkok, Thailand.
