WiFi vs. Zigbee who gonna win?

Smart grid news has reported one conflict about which is more suitable for in-home smart grid technology between WiFi and Zigbee. The story came from GE on Zigbee side and the Wi-Fi Alliance on WiFi side as they were bluffing one another. Later a comment mentions that is hard to compare due to unfinished standard and lack of implementation test.

Smart grid research at ARI, Virginia Tech and review of smart grid initiative in US presented by Dr.Manisa pipattanasomporn

Today, Dr.Manisa Pipattanasomporn, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at advanced research institute, United State, gave a presentation on subject overview of smart grid and relevant R&D at Virginia Tech-Advanced research institute. She visited Provincial electricity authority (PEA) ,Thailand to disseminate informations regarding to smart grid to PEA's executives and also engineers from several fields who involve in smart grid initiative project at PEA. The outlines of presentation are as follows
1. overview of smart grid
2. smart grid initiatives in the United States
3. 5 smart grid building blocks which are Standards, technologies, cyber security, legislation and education
4. current smart grid related research projects at VT-ARI
5. Other on-going research work at VT-ARI
She states that to develop the current grid into smart grid, at the initial stage, standards and legislation are most paramount factors and essentially required. Furthermore, PEA say that they have already launched project of developing of smart meter so called AMI (advanced metering infrastructure) in corporation with researcher from leading university in Thailand.

Electric Vehicles on the Rise: What Does That Mean for the Engineering Community?

You can't seem to turn on the news these days without hearing something new about electric vehicles (EVs). Electric cars and trucks are on their way, with the first commercial models due to hit the roads in 2011. But even before the first wave of EVs rolls out of dealers' showrooms, a lot of work is already under way, on multiple fronts, to make it possible for the roads — and the electric grid — to handle them.

Home area networks: Zigbee beats WiFi in cost, says GE

GE researchers have validated that Zigbee is less expensive than WiFi for networking meters and appliances. Sadly, they did not tackle at least two issues that are far more important. First, they did not consider any of the low-cost ZigBee alternatives. Second, they did not address electro-magnetic emissions, an issue that has some consumers concerned. Although a meter only broadcasts a few times per day, a home area network is always on and permeates the entire house. - Jesse Berst

GE Brings Energy Management Home: The Nucleus (Coming 2011)

A recent announcement by GE has brought the reality of smart grid in the home a step closer to everyday life. The launch of Home Energy Management, which is both a business unit and a product, sends a clear signal that GE is prepared to move aggressively into the space that lies at the intersection of smart grid, smart appliances, plug-in electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. Indeed it is the logic that manages the interaction between these systems that provides the greatest opportunity, both for energy savings and for sales. That is the daunting job being given to GE’s newNucleus Home Energy Manager.

New Opportunities in the Smart Grid

Monday, February 1, 2010

Utilities say entrepreneurs should look beyond consumers; they need management platforms and tools, too -- especially those that can make sense of the smart grid's firehose of data.
A lot of the interest in the smart grid industry tends to swirl around consumers and home energy management. It can be fun to picture consumers one day buying gadgets at big box retailers that will let them micromanage their home heating, cooling and lighting, and it's an especially attractive venture option for investors and entrepreneurs who cut their teeth on Internet and telecom startups. But utility execs say they are looking very hard at other types of software platforms, tools and applications that can help their networks automatically manage grid functions much deeper in the power grid, with distributed computing and with as little manual and human interaction as possible. That presents a largely untapped opportunity for startups and incumbent players alike.

Lessons from the Real World - Achieving the Ultimate Communications Network

Wednesday, December 15, 2010 1:30 AM - 2:30 AM ICT
One of the smart grid's most important goals is to pull together information from multiple sources. But to do that, you need a seamless communications network that spans multiple departments. And one that can grow with you as you layer on new applications.

That is why it is so exciting to see what Centerpoint Energy is accomplishing. Its network is designed to do waaaaaaaay more than deliver reads from the 2.4 million smart meters the Houston-based utility is putting in. In fact, Centerpoint's CIO has called the initiative "transformational to the entire company.” The network will enable (among other things):

• Groundbreaking grid management to increase reliability

• Pioneering process automation to reduce outage time

• Innovative remote monitoring and diagnostics to extend asset life

"Smart Grid is a global priority"

"Updating the way we get our electricity by staring to build a new smart grid that will save U.S. money, protect our source from blackout or attack, and deliver clean, alternative form of energy."

President Barack Obama
january 8, 2009

" What is Smart Grid "

smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology to save energy, reduce cost and increase reliability and transparency. Such a modernizedelectricity network is being promoted by many governments as a way of addressing energy independenceglobal warming and emergency resilience issues.
As with any heavily promoted initiative, many similar proposals have many similar names, including at least smart electric grid, smart power grid, intelligent grid (or intelligrid), FutureGrid, and the more modernintergrid and intragrid.

Goals

" What is Grid? "
