'Smart grid' needed for Thailand's power security

A cut from Bangkok Post on Feb,14 2011, 'Smart grid' needed for power security.

Thailand's growing demand of energy especially in electricity and the requirement of enhancing supply efficiency is the main factor that will expedite the needs for Smart Grid.

Mr.Bartosz Wojszczyk, the global smart grid technical leader for GE energy said that Thailand have to upgrade their power grid into smarter systems. This action would benefits not only in generation section but also transmission and distribution system.

He also states that GE has plan to make Thailand an execution and service hub for its smart grid business emphasizing on its customers in Southeast Asia.

By 2022, Thailand's energy share aims to raise the use of renewable energy such as wind, solar or biomass to be up to 20% of the whole country energy use. This would cause problem to the utility when this such high amount of fluctuating sources of electricity penetrates to the existing grid without any intelligent control approach. Therefore Smart grid technology would help utility to manage these renewable resources connected to their system as well as enable their customers to be smarter users.
